At American Legion Post 24, we honor the families who have loved ones serving in the U.S. Armed Forces. One way we do this is by providing free Blue Star Banners to families with one or more members on active duty.

What Is a Blue Star Banner?

The Blue Star Banner is a powerful symbol of service and sacrifice. First created in 1917 by Army Captain Robert L. Queisser during World War I, the banner was displayed in windows to let the community know that someone in the household was serving their country.

In 1919, the American Legion adopted the Blue Star Banner and began promoting its use nationwide. Over time, the tradition grew to include a gold star to represent those who made the ultimate sacrifice. Today, the Blue Star Banner continues to be a visible sign of pride, honor, and support for military families.

A Symbol of Community Pride

Displaying a Blue Star Banner is more than a family tradition — it’s a way for the entire McPherson community to show gratitude and respect for the men and women serving our country. When others see the banner, they are reminded of the courage, commitment, and sacrifice that military service represents.
