At American Legion Post 24, honoring the service of our veterans doesn’t stop when their tour ends—it continues through the dedication of our Honor Guard. These volunteers stand as a final salute at veteran funerals, providing a respectful and solemn tribute to those who served our country.
What the Honor Guard Does
The Honor Guard performs ceremonial duties at veteran funerals, including:
- Tribute of the veteran’s military service
- Presenting the American Flag to the family
- Playing Taps
- Furnishing Color Guards for parades and ceremonies
Each service is a powerful and moving gesture—one that means the world to the families we serve. It’s our way of saying: You are not forgotten.

When and How Often We Serve
Most often we are contacted by the funeral homes in McPherson County when a family requests Military Honors for their deceased loved one who Honorably served in one of the military branches. Occasionally we get a request directly from the family if the death happened in another state and they are only planning a private service. On average, we do 25 to 30 services per year.
It’s a flexible commitment—you’ll always be contacted in advance to confirm availability.
Want to Join the Honor Guard?
You must be a veteran and a member of Post 24. It is a sacred duty and a beautiful expression of patriotism and brotherhood. Most funerals take place during the working day, therefore, most members are retired, self-employed or have flexible daytime schedules.
We provide the training, part of the uniform, and all the support you need to participate.
For more information talk to one of the members listed above or contact Dan Hervey at 620-242-8744 (phone or text).
This is more than a volunteer role. It’s a sacred duty, a meaningful way to give back, and a beautiful expression of patriotism and brotherhood. If you feel called to serve, we invite you to stand with us.
